Chez Gaston
A beloved budget French bistro cherished by travellers and expats on street 172 — $10 menu and generous Gallic cuisine. Now permanently closed.
Chez Gaston was a popular budget French bistro in Phnom Penh, located at 219Er, Jayavarman VII Street (Street 172), near Phsar Kandal. It is now permanently closed. This entry preserves the memory of a place that offered some of the best value for French cuisine in the capital.
What Made It Famous
The $10 menu: an authentic three-course French meal, complete with a complimentary glass of wine or beer — a legendary deal for tight budgets.
Bistro cuisine: generous portions of tartare, duck breast, escargots, bouillabaisse, and braised beef cheeks.
Casual atmosphere: checkerboard flooring, warm wooden furniture, and a friendly welcome that kept expats and backpackers coming back.
For a French table still open in Phnom Penh, check out Bistrot de la Poste or Armand's — The Bistro.
For ten dollars, we shared a genuine French meal — tartare, dessert, and a glass of wine — in a tiled room where everyone knew each other. Chez Gaston was the budget soul of street 172.
