Why we chose this destination

Koh Dach, or Silk Island, has always intrigued us. Located just a few kilometres from Phnom Penh, it promises a quick escape while offering a glimpse into Cambodia's traditional crafts. We were looking for a day away from the city's hustle, and this small island seemed perfect for recharging.

The journey there

To reach Koh Dach, we took a tuk-tuk from our hotel in central Phnom Penh. The 12 km journey to the ferry terminal, located north of the city, cost us about 10 USD. Once we arrived at the dock, we boarded the ferry that crosses the Mekong. The ferry fare is very affordable, at around 1,000 riels (0.25 USD) per person.

The morning

We chose to leave early in the morning to enjoy the local atmosphere at the market and avoid the heat. Upon arriving on the island, we started by exploring the silk weaving workshops. It was fascinating to see the artisans at work and learn about the different steps in silk production.

After visiting a few workshops, we rented bikes at the dock. The island is small and flat, making it ideal for getting around. We pedalled through the villages, admiring the stilt houses and lush rice fields.

Lunch and the afternoon

For lunch, we decided to stop at the ferry dock, where several stalls offered local dishes. We tried noodles and fresh seafood, all at a very reasonable price. After the meal, we continued our exploration of the island.

We then decided to head to the beach on the northern side of the island. The entrance cost 2,000 riels, and we found picnic huts where we could relax and enjoy the view of the Mekong. The water was refreshing, perfect for a swim after an active morning.

The return

In the late afternoon, we began to think about our return. We opted for the Line 8 bus, which departs directly from the ferry terminal. It’s an economical option at around 1 USD, although it requires a change to Line 6 to reach central Phnom Penh.

For those who prefer more comfort, it is also possible to negotiate a round-trip fare with a tuk-tuk or taxi. We saw several drivers ready to wait for their clients on the island.
