Koh Dach

Silk Island on the Mekong: ancestral weaving, stilt villages, and tranquil countryside just a ferry ride from Phnom Penh.

Koh Dach (Silk Island) is a 30 km² island in the Mekong, just north of Phnom Penh. Renowned for its centuries-old weaving heritage, it offers a peaceful countryside escape from the capital's hustle and bustle.

Weaving. The Silk Weaving Centre, located a kilometre from the ferry dock, showcases silk worm farming, mulberry leaves, spinning, and intricate patterns. In the villages, stilt houses host wooden handlooms where artisans gladly demonstrate how they weave kramas (checked scarves).

By bike. Rent a bike or scooter at the ferry: the island is flat, with sandy paths winding through orchards (bananas, mangoes, corn), rice fields, and pagodas like Wat Ampor Phal. To the north, the seasonal “beach” features a sandy bank, bamboo huts, barbecues, and swimming in the river.

Access. Take a tuk-tuk to the Kdey Jas dock (RN6, after the Japanese bridge). Ferry runs from ~5:30 AM to 8:30 PM, costing ~1,000 riels/person, ~3,000 riels for tuk-tuk or motorcycle. Day tuk-tuk from the city: ~25–30 USD. Bring cash (USD or riels) — few cards/QR options on the island. Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is required in pagodas.

At Koh Dach, you hire a bike at the ferry and venture through rice fields and silk workshops — the city's noise fades away, replaced by the rhythmic clacking of looms and the flowing Mekong.
