Phnom Penh is a city of confluences — both literally and figuratively. It is here that the Mekong, one of Asia's great rivers, meets the Tonle Sap, the most fish-rich lake in the world. This junction, called Chaktomuk (meaning “four faces” in Khmer), holds significant symbolism for Cambodians. Viewed from a boat at sunset, the city takes on a poetic dimension that is hard to find from the streets.
Mekong cruises in Phnom Penh range from simple local boats at 10 USD to luxury dinner cruises featuring gourmet Cambodian cuisine. Here’s our honest overview of what’s available.
The Kanika — Our Dinner Show Cruise
The Kanika is a carefully restored traditional teak boat that sails every evening on the Mekong from Sisowath Quay. It’s our way of sharing with travelers what made us fall in love with Cambodia: the evening light on the river, Khmer cuisine prepared on board, and live traditional music.

Other Cruises Available in Phnom Penh
Let’s be thorough: other options deserve your attention depending on your budget and desires.
Sunset Cruises on Local Boats (10-20 USD)
Simpler boats offer sunset cruises without meals, departing from the same Sisowath Quay. Expect to pay 10 to 20 USD per person depending on the duration (1 to 1.5 hours). Ideal if you already plan to dine on-site or if you are traveling on a tight budget. Quality varies greatly from boat to boat — prefer bookings through platforms with verified reviews.
Heritage Line — Long-Distance River Cruises
For those looking to go further, Heritage Line offers multi-day cruises between Phnom Penh and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) along the Mekong. A luxury experience to discover the Vietnamese Mekong delta and the Cambodian border. Prices start from 2,000-3,000 USD per person for 5-7 days. Book well in advance.
Private Boats (150-300 USD)
Several operators offer full boat rentals for a group (up to 10-15 people). Ideal for a birthday, a bachelorette party, or a dinner among friends. Some boats also offer excursions to the floating villages of Tonle Sap from Phnom Penh.
The Mekong – Tonle Sap Confluence: Chaktomuk
The starting point for all cruises is also one of the most unique landscapes in Cambodia. The Chaktomuk — literally “four faces” — is where three waterways meet: the upstream Mekong (coming from the north, Laos, and China), the downstream Mekong (flowing towards Vietnam), and the Tonle Sap (connected to the large lake of the same name near Siem Reap).
This hydraulic crossroads has a unique feature in the world: during the rainy season (June-October), the Tonle Sap reverses its current. The waters of the Mekong, swollen by the Himalayan monsoon, flow back up the Tonle Sap towards the lake, causing it to triple in size. This phenomenon makes the Tonle Sap so fish-rich and allowed the Khmer civilization to thrive. On a sunset cruise, witnessing these two waters meet — one light brown, the other darker — is a moment of living geography that is quite exceptional.
Practical Tips
When to Book
During peak season (November to March), popular dinner cruises often sell out several days in advance. Book at least 48 hours in advance, ideally at the beginning of your stay to have a choice of dates.
How to Reach Sisowath Quay
Sisowath Quay runs along the Riverside in the heart of Phnom Penh. From most downtown hotels, it is accessible by foot or by tuk-tuk for 3-4 USD. From BKK1, expect to pay 5-7 USD. Grab works well in this area.
What to Wear
The evening chill on the water can be surprising during the dry season — bring a light jacket or shawl. During the rainy season, a light windbreaker is useful. Wear city shoes rather than flip-flops for boarding.
