On the Mekong there is an hour that changes everything. The sun drops, the pagodas turn gold, and the boat glides past a row of Haussmann-style buildings you do not expect here — Le Petit Paris, the Paris-inspired quarter on Koh Pich island, with its Arc de Triomphe replica and Champs-Élysées-style façades. That is the hour we offer you aboard the Kanika. One hour and twenty minutes under way, cocktail in hand, the Mekong–Tonlé Sap confluence as the backdrop: Phnom Penh’s best-rated sunset cruise, with five ticket options from 8 USD. Because we own and operate the boat, you are not booking through a reseller — you step aboard with the crew.
The Origin of the Kanika
It all began in the early 2000s when Jean-Pierre Fréneau — the captain, who still steers the boat today — discovered Cambodia for the first time. A few years later, his partner said one evening a phrase that became a family classic: "Sell the house and let's move to Cambodia!" And they did. Literally.
Settled in Phnom Penh, Jean-Pierre sought a way to tell the city’s story differently — to his loved ones and to himself. In 2013, he bought a catamaran designed for Cambodian river navigation and transformed it into a cruise boat: the Kanika. The idea can be summed up in one sentence, which he later repeated to Cambodge Mag: "see Phnom Penh from the outside and enjoy the calm of the Mekong". More than ten years later, he says he hasn’t grown tired of it.
Success led to expansion. A second boat, the Queen Mary, joined the fleet. Thirteen people now work for the two catamarans — eleven Cambodians and two French — with Cambodian captains officially certified by the river authorities. Articles dedicated to us regularly remind us: our two boats are, in Phnom Penh, the only cruise boats that ensure the safety of their passengers.
The Boat and Onboard Cuisine
The Kanika is a 26 × 10 meter catamaran designed for Cambodian river navigation: wide, stable, perfectly suited to the conditions of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap. The twin-hull architecture absorbs movements — an important point for passengers sensitive to rolling. Up to 120 passengers can be comfortably accommodated.
Onboard, two atmospheres coexist: the open spaces facing the setting sun, with armchairs and benches under the sky, and the covered spaces where the dining room, kitchen, and central bar are located. Passengers can move freely between the two during the cruise.
The kitchen is run by a Khmer brigade that prepares dishes onboard while sailing. No reheated trays: everything is freshly made, served at the table for the dinner option, and shared plates for the sunset tapas.
Our fleet: the Kanika sails alongside the Queen Mary, our second catamaran. Depending on the number of passengers, the formula, and the date, your cruise will be served on one or the other. Both boats are docked at the Sisowath Quay, opposite the Himawari Hotel.
The Three Options: Sunset, Dinner, Silk Cruise
The Kanika can be experienced in three different ways depending on the time of day and your desire. We offer five sunset tickets, two dinner formats, and a thematic morning cruise — each designed for a specific profile.
Sunset Cruise — 5 PM to 6:20 PM
"Magical sunset over the capital's skyline." This is the signature format, 1 hour and 20 minutes on the water at sunset, with five ticket options based on preference and budget:
- The Perfect Sunset — 8 $: simple access ticket. The boat, the river, the sunset. Drinks are purchased à la carte at the bar. The best panorama/price ratio in Phnom Penh.
- The Golden Cruise — 19 $: access + one drink (cocktail, beer, wine, or soft drink) + tapas included. The most chosen option for a first time.
- The Free Flow Cruise — 19 $: access + unlimited beer and sodas for 1 hour and 20 minutes. For those who want to enjoy without limits.
- The Very French Ticket — 26 $: access + glass of wine, charcuterie and cheese platter. A Parisian nod facing the Mekong, our bestseller among the French-speaking community.
- The VIP Ticket — 35 $: access + tapas platter + unlimited wine and cocktails for 1 hour and 20 minutes. The most relaxed format, for couples on their honeymoon or groups who want to think of nothing.
Dinner Cruise — 7 PM to 8:45 PM
The dinner cruise is the long format: 1 hour and 45 minutes on the river as Phnom Penh lights up, with dinner served at the table in a more intimate setting (fewer passengers, dim lighting). Two options:
- À la carte: choose freely from the chef's specialties.
- Full menus — from 26 $ to 65 $ depending on the selected menu, each including the cruise, four dishes, and one drink. The menus change with the seasons and market arrivals.
Quote from the chef, in the onboard kitchens: "In the kitchen, our chefs create fusion cuisine inspired by its Asian side and its French training." The emphasis should be taken seriously — this is truly what is cooked onboard.
Silk Cruise — 8:30 AM to 12 PM
The format that is not often presented, and that's a shame: the thematic morning cruise on the Mekong, at the gentle pace of the river before the day's heat. 42 USD per person, starting from 15 people minimum (groups, privatizations, cultural classes). Three parts:
- Sailing on the Mekong southeast, outside the tourist perimeter, along the banks and floating villages.
- Visit to a Buddhist pagoda by the river — an active monastery, not a museum site, meeting with the monastic community according to prayer times.
- Interactive silk weaving workshop: demonstration and hands-on experience on a traditional loom in a local workshop, continuing the millennia-old Khmer craftsmanship.
Included: round-trip cruise, fruits, tea, coffee, fruit juices, beers, and sodas unlimited. This format is ideal for a corporate outing, a group of friends on vacation, or anyone who prefers morning light to evening.
The Itinerary on the River
Sisowath Quay stretches just north of the Chaktomuk, the four-armed confluence where the Mekong, Tonlé Sap, and Bassac meet. It is the hydrological heart of Cambodia — and one of the few places in the world where a river changes direction every year, during the rainy season, when the flooded Mekong pushes back the Tonlé Sap into the Great Lake. We are incredibly lucky to have it before our eyes.
From the quay, the Kanika casts off and sails on the Tonlé Sap and then on the Mekong, at the slow pace of the river. The panorama changes every two kilometers: the riverside facade on the city side, floating fishing villages on the countryside side — stilt houses, boats moored in clusters, kids waving goodbye — and, rounding the southern tip of the peninsula, the surprising facades of "Little Paris" on Koh Pich island: a row of light stone Haussmannian buildings, continuous balconies, a replica of the Arc de Triomphe. A contemporary development (launched in 2006, the Elysée district inaugurated in 2015) that stands out completely in the tropical landscape — one of the most photographed angles of the cruise.
On the return to the quay, the lights come on one by one along the shore: Phnom Penh, viewed from the water, is a different city than the one we traverse by tuk-tuk during the day.
What We Serve Onboard
Our chef has French training and a Khmer palate — the menu lives at the intersection of the two. It is a Khmer-French fusion cuisine: the country’s classic bases (amok, lok lak, kroeung, river fish, fresh spices), techniques and sauces inherited from French training. It is not a compromise, it is a dialogue.
On the drinks side, we maintain a well-curated menu: creative cocktails made from a local artisan distillery (Samai rum, Seekers gin, the Cambodian spirits that have emerged in the last ten years), French wines in a short selection, craft beers (local and imported), and freshly pressed fruit juices. And the classic soft drinks, for those who prefer to stay sober.
- Sunset cruise: depending on the chosen ticket, you will have cocktails, a glass of wine, tapas, a charcuterie-cheese platter, or open bar (see the Formulas section above). For the simplest ticket at 8 $, the bar operates à la carte.
- Dinner cruise: four-course menus (between 26 and 65 USD depending on the menu) including a drink, or free composition à la carte. The river fish amok, beef lok lak, and a mango dessert are permanent; other dishes change with the seasons and arrivals.
- Silk cruise: fresh fruits, tea and coffee, fruit juices, beers, and sodas unlimited throughout the morning.
Special diets (strict vegetarian, gluten-free, allergies) are accommodated if we are informed 24 hours in advance. We serve kosher or halal food only on dedicated privatization — at other times, the menu is Khmer-French fusion.
Privatized Events
A significant part of our activity involves privatizations — tailor-made evenings where you have control over the format, menu, decoration, and tempo. Four types of events occur most often:
- Private Party — intimate birthday, reunion, farewell party. The boat is yours for a sunset or evening, we adapt the music programming and menu to your theme.
- Corporate Seminar — convention closing, team evening, end of the quarter. We can arrange a work/presentation area in the main cabin in the afternoon, then switch to cocktail and dinner mode at sunset.
- Birthday — cake, lighting, personalized playlist. We have already organized birthdays for 30, 40, 50, and even 80 years onboard.
- Wedding — open-air secular ceremony, followed by dinner, first dance under the stars. We work with trusted local providers for decoration and the DJ.

When to Come, What to Wear
Cambodia has two seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the rainy season (May to October). Both are suitable for cruising, but each has its character.
- November to February: our favorite season. Clear skies, pleasant evening temperatures (22-28 °C), nice river breeze. Reservations are essential one to two weeks in advance.
- March-April: still dry, but hot (up to 35 °C at departure). The boat is covered, fans are running, we have no problems — but dress lightly.
- May to October: rain falls in short bursts, often at 3-4 PM. It almost always stops before departure. If it persists, we sail sheltered in the covered areas and refund in case of major alerts.
Attire: smart casual. No dress code imposed — you can see everything from polos to evening gowns. Bring a light sweater for the return if you are sensitive to the cold, as the river cools the evening.
