The first surprise in the glass
When you order coffee in Cambodia, the first surprise often lies in the presentation. Contrary to what one might expect, coffee is often served with a small dose of sugar or milk, even if this is not specified. This habit can surprise visitors, but it is an integral part of the experience.
Drinks to know
Cambodia offers a variety of coffee-based drinks that are worth discovering. Here are some of the most popular:
- Café noir : un café simple, fort et souvent sucré.
- Café glacé : servi avec des glaçons, idéal pour les journées chaudes.
- Café au lait : un mélange crémeux, généralement sucré.
- Café frappé : un mélange de café, de glace et de lait, très rafraîchissant.
- Chocolat frappé : une alternative gourmande pour les amateurs de chocolat.
- Jus de pastèque : la boisson préférée de Géraldine, frais et désaltérant.
Street coffee and contemporary coffee: two different experiences
Street cafes are ubiquitous in Cambodia. They offer a friendly atmosphere where you can enjoy a coffee while observing daily life. In contrast, establishments like Brown Coffee provide a more modern experience, with a stylish setting and a particular focus on drink presentation. Each place has its charm, and both are worth exploring.
How to ask for less sugar or less milk
If you wish to adjust your order, it is important to do so from the start. To ask for less sugar, you can say 'sang knea' (less sugar) or 'no sugar' in English. For milk, use 'sang leche' to indicate that you want less. Cambodians are generally very accommodating and will appreciate your effort to speak their language.
Our preferences and tips
For us, coffee in Cambodia is an experience to savour. Jean-Pierre prefers French-style coffee, strong and aromatic, while Géraldine cannot resist fresh watermelon juice, perfect for refreshing after a hot day. We advise you not to hesitate to explore different cafes and try various drinks to find the ones you enjoy the most. Every sip is a discovery!
