Why we stopped
We chose to make a stop in Sihanoukville to enjoy the dry season and extend our stay with some time on the islands. The city is often seen as just a transit point, but we were curious to discover what it had to offer.
Our first impression
Upon our arrival, we were struck by the vastness of Sihanoukville. The traffic was heavy and the environment very urbanised, which contrasts with the image of idyllic beaches one might have. This first impression prompted us to explore further.
What we found on site
Sihanoukville is undergoing significant changes, with many construction sites in progress. However, we also noticed the presence of numerous services, restaurants, and hotels. This makes the city convenient for travellers, even if the transformations can sometimes seem chaotic.
The beaches and areas visited
We took the time to visit some iconic beaches like Independence Beach and Sokha Beach. Although their accessibility can vary, they offer a pleasant respite away from the urban hustle. We also explored the city centre and the port area, where one can feel the vibrancy of the city.
Staying overnight before the ferry
For our night on site, we chose a convenient hotel close to the ferry departure point. Accommodation options range from 25 to 60 USD depending on comfort and season. This allowed us to rest before our departure to the islands.
A useful stop or a destination in its own right?
Although often reduced to its construction sites and casinos, the city has much to offer travellers. For those wishing to take a break before catching the ferry, one night may be sufficient. However, for those wanting to explore more, it is possible to spend more time here, provided you have a clear plan.
