Wat Sowann Thamareach
A countryside Buddhist temple about 20 km from Phnom Penh: a giant Angkor-style gateway, elephant sculptures and rare peace — ideal for photography and a picnic.
Wat Sowann Thamareach (often spelled Wat Sovann Thomreach) is a small Buddhist monastery in the countryside, about 20 km north of Phnom Penh in Prek Pnov district (Praek Pnov). It is not an official « tourist » site, but well worth the trip for lovers of calm and photography.
On arrival
A huge gateway in the style of Angkor's city gates, adorned with remarkably lifelike elephant sculptures, marks the entrance. The temple then reveals fine sculpture, mural painting and stone carving on warm reddish sandstone typical of Khmer religious architecture.
Inside
Beautiful murals depict scenes of Cambodian life throughout your visit; the building's surprising coolness makes exploring pleasant even on hot days. The atmosphere is exceptionally quiet — allow a fairly short visit, but a delightful one if you seek tranquillity and strong photo opportunities.
On site
Shaded picnic tables let you extend the outing with friends or family. Remarkable architecture, active temple, few crowds — a perfect complement to capital landmarks such as Wat Phnom.
Address: National Road 130, Prek Pnov (MQ37+V6F). Plan a tuk-tuk or taxi from Phnom Penh (roughly 30–45 minutes depending on traffic).
Far from the capital's noise, the elephant gateway of Wat Sowann Thamareach opens onto a temple of almost untouched serenity — the perfect spot for a picnic and a sketchbook.
