Central Market (Phsar Thmey)
The most famous Art Deco covered market in Phnom Penh: a yellow dome from 1937, treasures beneath the dome, and vibrant local life in the city centre.
The Central Market (Phsar Thmey, meaning "new market") is one of the most photographed landmarks in Phnom Penh: a bustling commercial hub and a yellow architectural masterpiece at the heart of the capital, frequented daily by locals and visitors alike.
Architecture & History
Inaugurated in 1937 under French protectorate, the building was designed by architects Jean Desbois and Louis Chauchon. Its central dome, measuring 26 metres, surrounded by four vaulted wings, was reputed to be the largest covered market in Asia at the time. The layout maximises natural ventilation to stay cool despite the heat — the site once occupied a completely drained marshy lake before construction.
Market Layout
Under the dome: jewellery, gold, silver, and luxury second-hand watches. The four wings: electronics, stationery, household accessories, Khmer silks, and shoes. Outer perimeter: flowers, tropical fruits, fishmongers, and butchers. Food corner: iced coffee, nom banh chok, spring rolls, and local desserts — renowned Cambodian breakfasts around the market.
Hours: daily 7am–6pm. Address: Calmette (Street 53), Phnom Penh. Payment in riels or dollars; haggling is expected for clothing, souvenirs, and electronics (prices often fixed at the expense).
Under the yellow dome, surrounded by glimmering gold and the aroma of nom banh chok, Phsar Thmey encapsulates Phnom Penh: a monument, market, and street spectacle all in one.
