What We Imagined Before Experiencing It
Before experiencing our first rainy season in Cambodia, we had a rather stereotypical image of this time. We imagined long days of continuous rain, a grey sky, and a gloomy atmosphere. We had heard about the floods, but we didn’t realise how much it could affect daily life.
What the Rain Really Changes
The reality turned out to be quite different. Downpours arrive suddenly, often after a bright blue sky. In 2014, we were surprised by torrential showers that lasted only 15 minutes but instantly turned the streets into rivers. This phenomenon made travel nearly impossible, as the water covers the roads and hides dangers like potholes or debris.
The Discomforts Travellers Should Be Aware Of
Travellers need to be aware of the discomforts that the rainy season can bring. Transport can be heavily disrupted, and tuk-tuks often find themselves stuck in traffic caused by flooding. Water seeps into cars. Additionally, some attractions may be inaccessible, making it difficult to plan visit times.

The Upsides of This Season
Despite the downsides, there are also positive aspects to the rainy season. The freshness brought by the rain is very welcome, especially after days of intense heat. The landscapes become greener and more vibrant, offering beautiful photo opportunities. Moreover, the rainy season attracts fewer tourists, allowing you to enjoy the sites without the crowds.
Our Gear and Habits
To cope with these conditions, suitable gear became essential. The poncho became our best friend: lightweight, easy to carry, and effective for protection against showers. We also learned to adapt our habits: we plan our outings based on weather forecasts and have gotten into the habit of always wearing appropriate shoes for walking in water.

For those wishing to visit Cambodia during the rainy season, here are some practical tips. Check the weather forecasts before you go and remain flexible with your schedule. Bring waterproof clothing and suitable shoes. Finally, don’t hesitate to explore indoor activities, such as museums or art workshops, which can be great alternatives on rainy days.
