Description
Taking the train from Phnom Penh Railway Station offers a comfortable, convenient, and environmentally friendly way to travel.
With its central location and well-organized facilities, it provides an enjoyable experience while allowing passengers to discover the beauty of Cambodia's landscapes along the way.
History:
Construction of Phnom Penh Station began in 1929 during the French Indochina era. It was designed by French architect Louis Chauchon, who also designed several other iconic buildings across the country. The station was officially inaugurated in 1932.
During the colonial period, Phnom Penh Station served as a significant transportation center connecting Cambodia to other Indochinese cities such as Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) in Vietnam and Bangkok in Thailand. Trains connected Phnom Penh to these destinations, facilitating the transportation of goods and people.
However, in the following decades, due to civil war, political conflicts, and lack of maintenance, Cambodia's railway network suffered severe damage and neglect. Phnom Penh Station also sustained significant damage.
Fortunately, starting from the 2000s, restoration and modernization efforts have been undertaken to revive the Cambodian railway system. Phnom Penh Station was renovated and restored, aiming to reconnect the country to the regional railway network.
