Kbal Spean

The 'River of a Thousand Lingas': Angkorian Hindu sculptures (11th–13th centuries) carved into the riverbed sandstone, nestled in the Phnom Kulen National Park — a jungle trek steeped in Khmer history away from the classic temples.

Kbal Spean is an archaeological site on the southwestern slopes of the Kulen Hills, within the Phnom Kulen National Park. Known as the ‘River of a Thousand Lingas’, it is famous for its 11th to 13th-century Hindu sculptures carved into the sandstone of a jungle riverbed — a unique alternative to stone temples.

Highlights

Thousand Lingas: myriad phallic symbols (Shiva) in regular bumps on the rocky bed — the water flowing towards Angkor was believed to ‘fertilize’ the rice fields downstream. Bas-reliefs: reclining Vishnu on the serpent, Brahma on the lotus, Shiva and Uma on Nandi; 13th-century Buddhist images. Natural bridge & waterfall: Kbal Spean means ‘head of the bridge’ — a stone arch over the river; the trail ends with a small waterfall for a refreshing rest.

Visitor Logistics

~50 km northeast of Siem Reap — about 1 hour by car, a bit longer by tuk-tuk. Angkor Pass required (to be purchased in advance, shown at the trailhead). Hiking: 1.5 km uphill in the jungle (~3.4 km round trip), ~45 minutes each way, with roots, slopes, and large boulders. 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM; last entry at 3:00 PM. Rainy season (July–December): lively water over the reliefs and full waterfall · dry season (January–April): sculptures clearly visible, stream may be dry.

Tips & Combinations

Wear non-slip hiking shoes (slippery sandstone), bring insect repellent, and water (vendors mainly at the parking area). Often combined with Banteay Srei or the Cambodia Landmine Museum.
