Champey Academy of Arts

A vibrant non-profit arts school in central Phnom Penh teaching Khmer dance, music and painting to disadvantaged youth — an immersive cultural stop, not a static museum.

Champey Academy of Arts (CAA) is a non-profit school run by the Kasumisou Foundation, dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Cambodian culture. It offers free daily vocational training in the Khmer arts to disadvantaged youth aged 5 to 22, serving as both a community sanctuary and a unique stop for travelers.

Disciplines & daily classes

Traditional Khmer dance: highly disciplined classical styles (such as Apsara) and lively folkloric storytelling dances. Traditional Cambodian music: lessons on local instruments; on Fridays and Saturdays, classes for the chapey dang veng — a long-necked two-string guitar used for musical storytelling. Drawing & painting: meticulous religious and historical Cambodian styles alongside contemporary work.

The immersive visitor experience

Unlike static museums, visitors can wander the lively pavilions. Students and teachers often explain the spiritual meaning behind dance gestures, let you try local instruments, try on outfits, or join the dance floor. The on-site boutique sells handicrafts and student paintings — purchases and tips directly fund scholarships and modest stipends for senior student-trainers.
