Angkor National Museum
A world-class archaeological institution: an essential educational prelude to the Angkor Park — Khmer empire, multimedia, and the gallery of 1,000 Buddhas in a temple-inspired complex.
The Angkor National Museum is a modern archaeological institution in Siem Reap, set within a vast temple-inspired complex. It serves as the definitive prelude to the Angkor archaeological park, showcasing precious artifacts and multimedia exhibitions that trace the golden age of the Khmer Empire (9th–14th centuries) — royal history, engineering, and the spiritual evolution from Hinduism to Buddhism.
The Galleries
Starting with an introduction room, there are eight chronological galleries: the Gallery of 1,000 Buddhas (the museum's jewel — over a thousand illuminated statues), pre-Angkorian periods (Funan, Chenla), great Khmer kings (Jayavarman II, Suryavarman II), Angkor Wat & Angkor Thom, inscriptions (ancient Sanskrit and Khmer steles), and religions, beliefs & costumes.
Visitor Strategy
Visit before the temples to understand the bas-reliefs and architecture on-site. From 11 am to 3 pm: the entire museum is air-conditioned — perfect for the midday heat. A multilingual audio guide is highly recommended (myths of the lintels and statues). It is very well-rated on TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet.
Address: 968 Vithei Preah Sihanouk Ave, Krong Siem Reap — the boulevard leading to Angkor Wat. 8:30 am – 6:30 pm daily. 12–15 USD for adults, ~6 USD for children — not included in the Angkor pass. Accessible, with a shop, free parking, and a café.
In the Gallery of 1,000 Buddhas, before witnessing the sunrise at Angkor Wat, one truly begins to grasp the significance of these kings, gods, and bas-reliefs — the museum transforms a temple visit from a stroll into an epic journey.
