Pagode d'Argent

Wat Preah Keo Morakot is a sumptuous royal temple within the Royal Palace, home to Cambodia's most sacred treasures, from its silver floor to the crystal Emerald Buddha.

The Silver Pagoda (Wat Preah Keo Morakot — Temple of the Emerald Buddha) is a spectacular royal sanctuary located in the southern grounds of the Royal Palace. Rebuilt in 1962, it houses the country's most sacred cultural relics and hosts major royal ceremonies. Unlike ordinary wats, no monks reside here permanently.

Interior Treasures. The pagoda is named for its 5,329 silver tiles (over 5 tonnes), with a section near the entrance remaining visible. The Emerald Buddha (Baccarat crystal, 17th century) sits on the central pedestal. An 18-carat gold Maitreya weighing 90 kg (1906–1907) is adorned with over 2,000 diamonds, including a 25-carat stone on its chest. A ceremonial staircase made of Italian marble leads to the hall.

Grounds. Covered galleries feature frescoes from the Reamker (1903–1904, Cambodian Ramayana). White stupas honour Kings Ang Duong and Norodom, as well as Princess Kantha Bopha. A stone replica of Angkor Wat is set on the lawn.

Practical Information. Entry is included in the Royal Palace ticket for $10 (cash at the ticket office, Samdach Sothearos Blvd). Open daily from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM — morning visits are recommended. Strict dress code: shoulders and knees must be covered. Photography is allowed in the courtyard; interior photography is prohibited.

The sight of the silver tiles at the entrance, followed by the crystal Buddha and the golden Maitreya, is truly breathtaking. Arriving at 8 AM with our Palace ticket, we nearly had the courtyard to ourselves.
