Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach)
A 20-metre stupa in the heart of Phnom Penh marking Cambodia's liberation from French rule on 9 November 1953 — a masterpiece by modernist architect Vann Molyvann, unveiled in 1958.
The Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach) is an iconic 20-metre architectural landmark in the absolute heart of Phnom Penh. Built in 1958, it stands as a proud symbol of Cambodia's liberation from nearly a century of French colonial rule, which concluded on 9 November 1953. It also honours the nation's war dead — wreaths are laid here on national holidays.
Design & architecture
The lotus blueprint: designed by revered Cambodian modernist Vann Molyvann, the reddish-brown stone stupa takes the shape of an unfolding lotus bud. Angkorian influence: the form echoes Khmer temple towers; multi-headed Nagas (guardian serpents) accent each tiered level, as at Angkor Wat.
Visitor experience
Traffic roundabout: at the major intersection of Sihanouk Boulevard and Norodom Boulevard. Because it sits inside a busy roundabout, visitors cannot cross inside or climb the structure. Day: admire stone textures and landscaped promenades. Night: dynamic red, white, and blue floodlights representing the national flag. Celebrations: focal point for parades on Independence Day (9 November) and Constitution Day (24 September), when the internal plinth may be lit with a royal flame.
Admission: free, open 24 hours. East along Sihanouk Boulevard: the Statue of King Father Norodom Sihanouk and the Cambodian Constitution Monument. Within a 10-minute walk or short tuk-tuk ride from the Royal Palace, National Museum, and BKK1 dining district.
By day the carved nagas catch the light; by night the stupa glows in Cambodia's colours — a quiet reminder that independence is written in Phnom Penh's stone.
