Angkor Ceramic Museum at Tani
Discover the Angkor Ceramic Museum at Tani, the first and only museum in Cambodia built on an active archaeological site, revealing the craftsmanship and trade of the Angkor Empire.
The Angkor Ceramic Museum at Tani (Khmer Ceramic Museum) is the first and only museum in Cambodia built directly on an active archaeological site. Located in the historic village of Tani, in the Prasat Bakong district, it protects a territory of 34 hectares where excavations have revealed a significant ancient industrial centre. This is an essential dive into daily life, international trade, and wood-fired technologies at the height of the Angkor Empire.
Archaeological Site & Exhibitions
Discovered and excavated with international archaeologists in the mid-1990s, the site has transformed our understanding of ancient Khmer craftsmanship.
Ancient Kilns: The landscape preserves the remains of dozens of structural kilns; the ground is scattered with authentic shards — you walk at the heart of a real excavation. Showcases: Intact ceramics extracted from the local soil — domestic ware, architectural tiles, ceremonial zoomorphic jars (9th–11th centuries). Dragon Kilns: Exhibitions on these elongated kilns capable of very high temperatures for quality glazed stoneware.
Another Address: Khmer Ceramics & Fine Arts Centre
To meet living artisans or take a pottery class, head to the Khmer Ceramics & Fine Arts Centre on River Road in Siem Reap: a living workshop (free entry), demonstrations, and classes for about 25 USD on a traditional wheel — it is not a historical museum like Tani.
Access. Tani Village, Run Ta Ek commune, Prasat Bakong district — about 30 km northeast of Siem Reap (~45 min by tuk-tuk through the countryside). Hours: Tuesday–Sunday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (closed Monday). Accessible, toilets, paths around the mounds, free parking.
At Tani, surrounded by displays of Angkorian jars and mounds covered in shards, one realizes that Khmer pottery was not just a detail; it was an industry — and this museum, built on the very excavation site, tells this revolution better than any book.
