Mondulkiri at a glance: The least populated province in Cambodia (less than 80,000 inhabitants over 14,000 km²). Mainly inhabited by the Bunong, an animist indigenous people with a tradition of elephant domestication. Average altitude 700-900 m, cool climate at night.

What to do in Mondulkiri Forest

Bou Sra Waterfall

Located 43 km from Sen Monorom, Bou Sra Waterfall is one of the most impressive in Cambodia — a main drop of 10 m followed by a second drop of 25 m, set in a dense forest backdrop. The road to access it traverses the forest on laterite tracks (motorbike highly recommended). Allow 3-4 hours round trip from Sen Monorom.

Putang Village and Bunong Villages

Several Bunong villages around Sen Monorom welcome visitors for immersive half-day experiences with a local guide. Here, you can discover the community's traditions — house construction, crafts, relationships with the forest and elephants. These visits generate direct income for families.

Dang Phlet and Romanear

Two smaller waterfalls, 10-15 km from Sen Monorom, accessible by bike or motorbike. Romanear ("daughter of the water" in Bunong) is particularly beautiful at the end of the rainy season. Less frequented, it’s possible to be alone on site.

How to get to Mondulkiri

Bus from Phnom Penh (7-8 hours, 10-15 USD). Mekong Express and Phnom Penh Sorya are the most reliable companies. The road has been paved to Sen Monorom since late 2023. Avoid private mini-vans on this route — accidents are more frequent.

Malaria: Mondulkiri is in a moderate malaria risk zone. Consult your doctor before departure for recommended prophylaxis. Mosquitoes are especially active in the evening and early morning — use DEET repellent and long sleeves at dusk.

Questions fréquentes

Yes, if you have 15 days or more and an interest in nature and indigenous cultures. For a short stay (7-10 days), the transport time/experience ratio is less favorable. Mondulkiri fits well into a larger tour combined with Ratanakiri (northeast).

Strongly recommended for visits to Bunong villages — having a local guide facilitates exchanges and ensures that your visit is welcome and beneficial for the community. For waterfalls accessible by motorbike (Bou Sra, Dang Phlet), you can go alone with a GPS map.
