Zone 1 — City Center & Old Market
The historic center of Siem Reap, around Psar Chas (Old Market) and Pub Street, is the liveliest and most convenient area for travelers who want everything at their fingertips: restaurants, bars, markets, tuk-tuk agencies, souvenir shops. It’s also the noisiest, especially on weekends or party nights.
City Center / Old Market Summary
For whom: travelers who want liveliness, nightlife, maximum convenience
Not for whom: families with young children seeking peace, travelers sensitive to noise
Indicative prices: 20-40 USD (guesthouses), 60-130 USD (boutique hotels)
Distance to Angkor: 6-8 km, 15-20 min by tuk-tuk
The Old Market area has a concentration of well-maintained guesthouses between 20 and 40 USD per night, with air conditioning, wifi, and often breakfast included. A few good standard boutique hotels can also be found here, with rooftop pools. The noise from Pub Street quickly diminishes as you move away by one or two streets.
Zone 2 — Wat Bo Neighborhood (Our Recommendation)
The Wat Bo neighborhood, on the east bank of the small Siem Reap River, is the area we recommend most for a first stay. It offers the best balance in the city: quiet, green, filled with charming boutique hotels at reasonable prices, and just a 10-minute walk to the Old Market or a few minutes by tuk-tuk.
It’s also the neighborhood where the best contemporary Khmer cuisine (Cuisine Wat Damnak, Sugar Palm, and others) is concentrated, along with some cafes and galleries that add to the neighborhood's vibe. Wat Bo Street itself, lined with trees, is pleasant to stroll along in the evening.
Wat Bo Zone Summary
For whom: all profiles, especially couples and travelers looking for charm without the noise
Not for whom: those who want to be at the foot of Pub Street
Indicative prices: 25-50 USD (charming guesthouses), 60-150 USD (boutique hotels)
Distance to Angkor: 6-8 km, 15-20 min by tuk-tuk
The density of charming boutique hotels in this area — small family-run properties with pools, gardens, and well-crafted Khmer decor — is remarkable. For a budget of 60-100 USD per night, the value for money is unbeatable compared to other Southeast Asian destinations.
Zone 3 — Airport Road & Angkor Resort Zone
National Road 6, which leads to the former airport (now closed), concentrates most of the major international hotel brands in Siem Reap: Sofitel Angkor, Mövenpick, Park Hyatt, Anantara. These establishments offer all the services expected from a 5-star international hotel: multiple restaurants, spa, large pool, concierge, shuttle to the temples.
National Road 6 Zone Summary
For whom: travelers loyal to major chains, business groups, families with children who want the infrastructure of a large hotel
Not for whom: those looking for local charm or proximity to restaurants and markets within walking distance
Indicative prices: 120-300 USD (international 5 stars)
Distance to Angkor: 4-6 km, 10-15 min by tuk-tuk or shuttle
The advantage of this area is its good positioning between the city center and the temples, and it has comprehensive facilities. The downside is that it completely lacks the charm and authenticity of Cambodia found in the Wat Bo or Old Market areas.
Zone 4 — Rice Field Resorts & Countryside
For an immersive experience, away from traffic and noise, a few exceptional establishments are located in the Cambodian countryside, 10-20 minutes from Siem Reap. Endless rice fields, grazing buffalo, traditional stilt bungalows, silence.
The most well-known is Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang — a collection of Khmer-style wooden villas in the middle of the rice fields, with two pools, a gourmet Khmer restaurant, and daily cultural activities. This is where Angelina Jolie stayed during the filming of First They Killed My Father. Expect to pay from 400-600 USD per night for a villa.
Amansara, just minutes from Angkor Wat, is another absolute reference — 24 suites, gourmet restaurant, pool, and private access to Angkor at dawn by car. The most exclusive establishment in the region, starting at 800-1,000 USD per night.
Countryside / Rice Fields Summary
For whom: travelers seeking a unique experience, celebrations, honeymoons, 5 stars in a rural setting
Not for whom: tight budgets, travelers who want to go out on foot in the evening
Indicative prices: 300-1,000 USD+ depending on the establishment
Distance to Angkor: 5-15 km, private shuttle generally included
Practical Tips for Booking
- Pool — essential in high season: during the dry season (November-April), temperatures reach 35-40°C in the middle of the day. A pool transforms the stay, especially if you return from the park at noon. Beyond 50 USD per night, most boutique hotels have one.
- Air conditioning: always check, even in budget options. The heat is real even in the "cool season".
- Breakfast included: often offered in guesthouses and boutique hotels. A good Khmer breakfast (bai sach chrouk, num banhchok) is better than a generic buffet — ask what the hotel offers before booking.
- Airport transfer: the new SAI airport is 50 km from the center (40-50 min). Most hotels offer a private transfer, often more reliable and not much more expensive than independent taxis (~20-25 USD). Ask the hotel before arriving.
- Temple shuttle: major hotels organize shuttles to Angkor Wat (including sunrise). Boutique hotels usually recommend trusted tuk-tuk drivers. Agree on the fare and schedule the night before.
When to Book According to Season
For most travelers, a charming boutique hotel in Wat Bo between 60 and 100 USD per night offers the best experience: well-kept setting, pool, attentive service, and a neighborhood restaurant just a 5-minute walk away. Avoid focusing solely on price — a 25 USD hotel on a noisy street in the center can ruin a night’s sleep before a 4:30 AM sunrise.
Questions fréquentes
The Angkor Resort zone (National Road 6 and surrounding area) is physically closest to the temples, about 4-6 km away. But the difference with the Wat Bo and Old Market areas (6-8 km) is minimal by tuk-tuk — a maximum of 5 minutes. Amansara, a luxury resort adjacent to the archaeological park, is literally the closest establishment to the temples. For most travelers, proximity to the temples should not be the main criterion for choosing a neighborhood.
Yes, many. The Wat Bo neighborhood and the streets parallel to the Old Market concentrate well-maintained, clean, air-conditioned guesthouses with wifi and often breakfast included for 15-30 USD per night. Quality has greatly improved over the last ten years. Prioritize establishments with recent reviews on Booking.com or Google, filtering those that mention cleanliness and comfort of bedding.
It depends on the establishments. The new Siem Reap-Angkor airport (SAI, opened in October 2023) is 50 km from the center, taking 40-50 minutes. Major international hotels generally offer a round-trip transfer included or charged (~25-35 USD). Boutique hotels and guesthouses recommend their partner drivers. Always ask before booking to avoid an unpleasant surprise upon arrival.
