Pub Street — a Must-Visit
Pub Street (Sok San Road) is the most well-known street in Siem Reap for foreigners: lights, music, beers at 0.50 USD during happy hour, bars side by side. Touristy, noisy, sometimes kitschy — but hard to avoid at least once. The atmosphere is festive and cosmopolitan. The pedestrian street at night is safe and lively.
To be honest: most bars on Pub Street are interchangeable. The appeal is the collective atmosphere, not the cocktails (often mediocre at this price).
The Adjacent Streets — Best Addresses
The real nighttime discoveries in Siem Reap are in the streets around Pub Street, not on Pub Street itself:
Khmer Live Music Street — several bars offer traditional and contemporary Cambodian music concerts in the evening. Traditional instruments, Khmer voices, a very different vibe from electronic bars.
Wat Bo Road — the quieter area northeast of the center, with terrace bars and restaurants, less crowded, more reasonable prices. A more local atmosphere.
Craft Cocktail Bars — a few establishments offer serious cocktails with local spirits (Cambodian gin, Samai rum) and Khmer herbs. Prices: 6-10 USD per cocktail — high for Cambodia, reasonable for the quality.
The Perfect Evening in Siem Reap
7 PM — Dinner at a local restaurant around Psar Chas. Budget: 6-12 USD.
8 PM — Show at Phare Cambodian Circus (reservation required) or Apsara dance at a restaurant-show.
10 PM — Drink at a craft cocktail bar on Wat Bo Road or in the alleys behind Pub Street.
11 PM - 12 AM — Stop by Pub Street if the vibe appeals to you. Return via Grab or pre-arranged tuk-tuk.
The Night Market
The Angkor Night Market (between Pub Street and the artisan market) is very touristy but pleasant for wandering — artisan shops, snacks, street massages (5-8 USD for 30 minutes). Quieter than Pub Street, suitable for families and alcohol-free evenings.
Questions fréquentes
Yes, a few clubs open after midnight around Pub Street. They attract a predominantly international backpacker clientele. The club scene remains limited compared to Phnom Penh — Siem Reap is more of a bar city than a club city.
Pub Street is safe and well-lit. The surrounding streets are less so — prefer a tuk-tuk or Grab for distances of more than 10-15 minutes on foot, especially if you are carrying your phone visibly. There is no place to absolutely avoid in Siem Reap, but as everywhere, do not show valuables.
