LaBaab Restaurant is a beloved spot in Phnom Penh for its authentic countryside Cambodian cuisine, elegantly reinterpreted. The brand has two branches: the flagship Daun Penh and the Koh Pich location (Diamond Island). Chef Rotanak Ros, trained in both French and Khmer techniques, elevates rustic recipes from the Lower Mekong.
Typical dishes range from 6 to 15 USD: prahok ktis (a dip of prahok and pork in coconut milk, served with fresh vegetables and edible flowers), fish amok, tamarind-marinated “mother-in-law” eggs, dried fish with pickled ants, and lok lak. Drinks include house cocktails, local beers, fine teas, and a wine list.
Daun Penh: located on the 3rd floor above the Pharmacie de la Gare, featuring preserved Khmer wooden interiors, soft jazz, and suspended metallic fish — a romantic and cosy setting. Koh Pich: a more contemporary decor on Diamond Island, offering lunch menus and Khmer New Year events.
Hours (both locations): lunch from 11am–2pm, dinner from 5pm–10pm, daily. Credit cards and mobile payments accepted, free Wi-Fi available.
Under the wooden beams of the flagship, a floral prahok ktis and a steaming amok remind us that Khmer haute cuisine can emerge from humble countryside recipes — LaBaab understood this before anyone else.
