Description

Cambodia's independence from France in 1953 is marked in Phnom Penh by Independence Monument. This obelisk was built five years later in the middle of a roundabout in the design of Angkor Wat's central tower. Independence Monument is even more impressive in the afternoon as its five levels of decorated Nagas are highlighted illustrating the complexity of the design. The monument was also built in memory of Cambodia's war dead so wreaths are laid here on national holidays.
